Join the spirit of charitable giving this holiday season by donating to The Group Rep Theatre, an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) performing arts organization.
Hello Theatre Lovers!
Our 50th Anniversary was a challenging and rewarding season for us at The Group Rep. We were grateful that our productions of Harold & Maude and The Mousetrap were so warmly received. And our critically-acclaimed Laramie Project was thoroughly embraced by the community and invited for an Encore Performance at the LGBT Center in Hollywood to recognize the 25th anniversary of Matthew Shephard’s death.
We took the advice of the Department of Cultural Affairs and made our production of Room Service totally immersive with the hotel staff greeting patrons at the front of the theater enveloping everyone in New York hoteliery of yesteryear.
By far, the most adventurous production for us was our co-production of Not Another Deaf Play which incorporated American Sign Language, music, animated projections and gave our actors the opportunity to voice the dialogue for deaf actors. This was a thrilling theatrical experience for all involved and we successfully reached out to a new, highly under-served community.
Organizationally, we developed two dozen new full-length plays and expanded our relationship with Paul Krekorian and the Department of Cultural Affairs who graced our building with the beautiful wrap-around mural, “The Faces of NoHo” by our neighbor, Levi Ponce. We also created and cultivated eight new one acts which were presented in our Upstairs space for a new round of Motel 66.
Our quest for 2024 is to increase our audience to a level beyond pre-Pandemic levels. This is a high-reaching goal, but we are ever-optimistic. Production costs keep rising, our rent keeps increasing (even during the Pandemic Shutdown), and lumber costs for sets have sky-rocketed. As you may have noticed, many intimate theaters have closed permanently, but we have somehow managed to persevere.
If you are giving to charities this year, we would so very much appreciate your support. Every little bit helps to defray costs, keep the doors open and actually guide us in our quest to keep thriving.
